eSIMs With Phone Numbers: Everything You Need to Know

Buying a travel eSIM usually raises one question before anything else: will it come with a phone number? It is a fair thing to ask. Some eSIMs include a number for calls and texts, and many don't, and the product pages don't always make the difference obvious.

This guide explains what an eSIM with a phone number actually is, how to spot a data-only plan before you pay, what happens to your own number when you add an eSIM, and the easiest ways to call and text abroad without paying for roaming.

In this guide:

What Is an eSIM With a Phone Number?

An eSIM is a SIM card that lives inside your phone as a chip instead of a piece of plastic. It works just like a regular SIM, and the plan you load onto it decides what you can do. An eSIM with a phone number is simply a plan that includes calls and, in most cases, SMS, so you get a number that people can ring or text.

In practice, you will come across two kinds of eSIM:

  • Your carrier's eSIM. Most mobile operators at home now let you switch your regular plan from a physical SIM to an eSIM. Your number, calls, texts, and data stay exactly the same. Only the format changes.
  • Travel eSIMs. These are short-term plans you add for a trip. They sit alongside your normal line and most of them are data-only, meaning you get a set amount of mobile data but no new number.

So when people ask "are eSIMs attached to numbers?", the honest answer is that it depends on the plan, not on the eSIM itself.

Why would you want a number?

For most trips, mobile data covers everything. A number can still be handy in a few situations:

  • Verification codes. Banks and some apps send one-time codes by SMS.
  • Local bookings. Calling a restaurant, a tour operator, or a driver is sometimes easier with a regular call.
  • Work calls. Some business contacts expect a standard phone number instead of an app.

As you will see below, you can handle all three without paying for a second number.

Do egoViet eSIMs Come With a Phone Number?

No. Every egoViet eSIM is a data-only plan. It gives you fast 5G/4G mobile data at your destination, but it doesn't include a phone number, standard calls, or SMS.

That is a deliberate choice, and it works in your favor. Without the cost of a calling plan, data-only eSIMs are much cheaper than roaming bundles. Once you are online, you can use apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime to call and message anyone at no extra cost. You also get to keep your own number on your phone the whole time, which we cover further down.

A few other things are worth knowing about egoViet plans before you travel:

  • On most plans, the validity period only starts when your phone connects to a network at your destination, not when you install it. The plan details show which rule applies.
  • When your high-speed data runs out, you stay online at a slower basic speed (around 128 kbps), which is still enough for text messages.
  • Hotspot and tethering are supported, so you can share data with a laptop or a travel partner.
  • Most plans don't need ID or passport registration. A few countries require it by law, and you will be asked at checkout if so.

How to Check if an eSIM Is Data-Only

Always check what a plan includes before you buy, whichever provider you use. Here is what to look for:

  1. Read the plan type. Look for wording like "Data only", "Data + Calls + SMS", or "Voice and SMS included". If calls and texts aren't mentioned, assume they are not included.
  2. Look for a phone number line. Many providers list it in the specs. On every egoViet product page you will find "Plan Type: Data Only" and "Mobile number not included" in the product description.
  3. Check after installing. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service) and tap the eSIM line. A data-only plan usually shows no number or an unknown one.

Good to know: Data-only doesn't mean you can't make calls. It means calls go through apps over the internet instead of the phone network.

Do You Keep Your Phone Number With an eSIM?

Yes. Adding a travel eSIM doesn't change, replace, or delete your existing number. Your phone simply gets a second line, the same way a dual-SIM phone works with two cards. Your regular SIM or eSIM stays on the device, and you choose in settings which line handles calls, texts, and mobile data.

If you later delete the travel eSIM, your home line is not affected.

Using Your Home Number With a Data-Only eSIM

Most travelers use this setup: the travel eSIM handles data, and the home line stays on so calls and texts to your usual number still arrive. Your phone needs to support dual SIM, which almost every eSIM-compatible phone does. If you are not sure about your model, check our list of eSIM-compatible devices.

On iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service or Mobile Data in some regions).
  2. Tap Cellular Data and select your travel eSIM.
  3. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching, so your phone doesn't quietly fall back to your home line.
  4. Tap your home line and make sure Data Roaming is off.
  5. Tap your travel eSIM and turn Data Roaming on. Many travel eSIMs need this to connect.

On Android

  1. Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager (on Pixel: Network & internet > SIMs).
  2. Set Mobile data to your travel eSIM.
  3. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM and turn it on for the travel eSIM.

Watch out for roaming charges: Even with data roaming off, your home carrier may charge you for receiving calls or sending texts abroad. Check your carrier's roaming rates before you go, or switch the home line off completely if you don't need it. For more tips, read how to avoid roaming charges while traveling.

How to Call and Text Without a Local Number

With a data plan running, these free apps cover nearly every situation:

  • WhatsApp: The most widely used option worldwide for messages, voice calls, and video calls. It keeps working with your usual number even when that line isn't providing data.
  • FaceTime and iMessage: Ideal if your friends and family use iPhones.
  • Telegram and Signal: Good alternatives with encrypted calls and chats.
  • Messenger and Instagram: Handy if your contacts are more active on social media.
  • Local favorites: LINE in Japan and Thailand, KakaoTalk in South Korea, and Zalo in Vietnam. Local businesses often reply faster there than to an international number.

For verification codes, keep your home line switched on for SMS. Most banks and apps will keep sending codes to the number you registered, so you won't need a new one. For calls to local businesses, a quick message on WhatsApp or LINE often works better than a phone call, especially if there is a language barrier.

Voice calls over apps use relatively little data, while video calls use a lot more. If you plan to video chat often, pick a plan with a bit of extra data.

Pick the Right eSIM for Your Trip

For most travelers, a data-only eSIM is the simplest and cheapest way to stay connected. You keep your own number, you avoid roaming fees, and you can still call and message through apps. Find your destination in the egoViet eSIM store, install your plan before you leave, and you will be online as soon as you land.

FAQs: eSIMs and Phone Numbers

Are eSIMs attached to phone numbers?

Only if the plan includes calls and texts. An eSIM from your home carrier carries your normal number. Most travel eSIMs, including all egoViet eSIMs, are data-only and don't come with a number.

Can I receive text messages with a data-only eSIM?

Not on the eSIM itself. You can still receive SMS on your usual number if you keep your home line switched on. Your carrier may charge for texts received abroad, so check its roaming rates first.

Does using an eSIM affect call quality?

No. Call quality depends on network coverage and signal strength, not on whether the SIM is physical or digital. For app calls, a steady 4G or 5G connection is what matters most.

Will WhatsApp keep working with my number if I use a travel eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp is tied to the number you registered with, not to the SIM that supplies your data. Your account, chats, and contacts stay the same while you use the travel eSIM for internet.
