What Is an APN and How Do I Update It?

If your eSIM shows full signal bars but nothing loads, the APN is one of the first things to check. It is a small setting most people never touch, but when it is wrong or missing, your phone can't get onto the internet.

Here is what an APN is, how it works, when you need to change it, and how to update your APN settings on iPhone and Android.

In this guide:

What Is an APN?

APN stands for Access Point Name. It is the address of the gateway between your mobile network and the internet. When you turn on mobile data, your phone uses the APN to ask the network: "Which door do I use to get online?"

Every SIM and eSIM has an APN. Most of the time, it is filled in automatically when you install the plan, which is why you have probably never seen it.

How Does an APN Work?

When your phone connects to mobile data, the network reads the APN and uses it to decide a few things:

  • Which gateway connects you to the internet
  • Which IP address your phone gets
  • Which security and billing rules apply to your connection

If the APN is wrong, the network doesn't know where to send you. You can see a strong signal, but data won't load.

When Do You Need to Change Your APN?

Usually never. With a travel eSIM, the APN is set automatically in most cases. You may need to check it if:

  • Your eSIM shows signal bars, but no apps or websites load.
  • Your installation email lists a specific APN for your plan.
  • Support asks you to check it during troubleshooting.

Before you touch the APN, rule out the common causes: make sure the eSIM is selected for mobile data and that data roaming is on for the eSIM line. Here are 8 quick fixes for an eSIM that won't connect.

APN Settings Explained

Field What it means Do you need to change it?
APN The gateway name, for example a short word given by the provider Only this one, if your eSIM details give a value
Username / Password Login for the gateway Usually left blank
APN type What the APN is used for, such as "default" for internet Usually leave as is
MMSC / MMS proxy Settings for picture messages Not needed for data-only eSIMs
Proxy / Port Optional network proxy Usually left blank

In short: enter only what your provider gives you, and leave the rest alone.

How to Update the APN on iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service).
  2. Tap your travel eSIM line.
  3. Tap Cellular Data Network (or Mobile Data Network).
  4. Under Cellular Data, type the APN exactly as given. Leave username and password blank unless you were given them.
  5. Go back to save, then toggle airplane mode on and off.

Don't see the option? Some networks lock the APN setting, which usually means it is already configured for you.

How to Update the APN on Android

Hand typing a new access point name into an Android phone's APN settings
  1. Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks (Samsung) or Settings > Network & internet > SIMs (Pixel), and choose your travel eSIM.
  2. Tap Access Point Names.
  3. Tap the + or Add button to create a new APN.
  4. Give it any name, enter the APN value exactly as given, and save.
  5. Select the new APN from the list, then toggle airplane mode on and off.

Good to know: APN values are case-sensitive, and one wrong letter breaks the connection. Copy them carefully. Don't delete your eSIM to "start over", since an eSIM usually can't be reinstalled once removed.

Still No Connection?

FAQs: What Is an APN?

What does APN mean on a phone?

APN stands for Access Point Name. It is the setting your phone uses to find the gateway between the mobile network and the internet.

Do I need to set an APN for my eSIM?

Usually not. Most eSIMs set the APN automatically. Only enter one if your eSIM details include an APN or support asks you to.

What happens if my APN is wrong?

You may see signal bars but have no internet. Correcting the APN and toggling airplane mode usually fixes it.

Can changing the APN harm my phone?

No. It only affects how that SIM line connects to mobile data. If something goes wrong, you can reset the APN to default in the same menu.
