Best time to visit Scotland: Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands

Scotland is a land of misty glens, castles, lochs, and lively cities, but its weather can change in minutes. Choosing the right time to visit makes a big difference, whether you want to hike in the Highlands, see the Edinburgh festivals, save money, or avoid the crowds. Here is the best time to visit Scotland for every kind of trip.

Scotland's Travel Seasons at a Glance

  • High season: June to August.
  • Shoulder seasons: April to May and September to October.
  • Low season: November to March (except around Hogmanay at New Year).

Best Time to Visit Scotland for Fewer Crowds: April to June and September to October

Spring and early fall are ideal for seeing the big sights, such as Edinburgh Castle, Loch Ness, and the Isle of Skye, without summer crowds. In May, days are already long and the countryside is green and full of wildflowers. In September and early October, the hills turn gold and bronze, and the light is beautiful for photos. Accommodation is also easier to find, especially on popular islands like Skye.

Best Time to Visit Scotland for Lower Prices: November to March

Winter brings the lowest prices on flights, hotels, and car rentals, outside the Christmas and New Year period. Cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen are full of cozy pubs, museums, and whisky bars, and a snowy Highland landscape is magical. Days are very short, especially in the north, and some rural attractions, ferries, and accommodation close for the season, so check before you go. Winter is also the best time to try to see the northern lights in the far north. See our guide to the northern lights in Europe.

Best Time to Visit Scotland for Good Weather: May to September

Late spring and summer give you the best chance of dry, mild weather and incredibly long days. In June, it barely gets dark in the far north. This is the time for island-hopping to Mull, Skye, and the Outer Hebrides, cruising Loch Lomond, or driving the North Coast 500. Temperatures are mild rather than hot, so pack layers and a waterproof jacket, and expect at least some rain.

Best Time to Visit Scotland for Hiking: May to September

For walking in the Highlands, late spring to early fall is best, with longer daylight, milder temperatures, and safer conditions on high ground. Try the West Highland Way, the trails of the Cairngorms National Park, or Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain (start early and check the mountain forecast). May and September are often the sweet spot, because the midges, tiny biting insects common in the west Highlands, are at their worst from June to August. Pack insect repellent.

Best Time to Visit Scotland for Festivals: All Year

  • January: Burns Night on 25 January, celebrating poet Robert Burns with haggis, whisky, and poetry. Late January brings Up Helly Aa, a dramatic Viking fire festival in Lerwick, Shetland.
  • May to September: Highland Games in towns across the country, with caber tossing, pipe bands, and Highland dancing.
  • August: The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest arts festival, plus the Edinburgh International Festival and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Book accommodation very early.
  • 31 December: Hogmanay, Scotland's famous New Year celebration. See our guide to New Year's Eve in Edinburgh.

Tips for Planning Your Trip to Scotland

  • Pack for four seasons in one day, with layers and a waterproof jacket.
  • Book August in Edinburgh months ahead, and book ferries and accommodation on popular islands early in summer.
  • Allow extra time for driving. Highland roads are often narrow and single-track with passing places.
  • Bring midge repellent for the west coast and islands in summer.
  • Stay connected. Mobile coverage can be patchy in remote glens, so download offline maps. An egoViet UK eSIM works across Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Compare options in our UK eSIM guide.
