Japan Visa Requirements: Who Needs a Visa and How to Apply

Japan visa requirements: a passport, a plane, and Mount Fuji

Japan visa requirements depend entirely on your passport. Travelers from around 70 countries, including Australia, the US, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and the EU, can visit Japan visa-free for short trips. Others, including travelers from India, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines, need to apply for a visa before they go, although the process is getting easier with Japan's new eVISA system.

This guide explains who needs a visa for Japan, how long you can stay, how to apply, the documents you need, and what to expect at immigration. Rules change, so always confirm the details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan or your nearest Japanese embassy before you book.

Who Can Visit Japan Without a Visa?

Japan has visa exemption agreements with around 70 countries and regions. If your passport is on the list, you can enter Japan for tourism, visiting friends and family, or short business trips without a visa. Stays are usually up to 90 days, but some nationalities get 15, 30, or 45 days.

Visa-exempt travelers include citizens of:

  • Australia and New Zealand: up to 90 days.
  • The United States and Canada: up to 90 days.
  • The UK, Ireland, and EU countries: up to 90 days. Some, such as the UK and Ireland, can extend once in Japan up to six months in total.
  • Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia: up to 90 days (Malaysia and some others need a passport with biometric data, or prior registration).
  • Thailand and Brunei: up to 15 days.
  • Indonesia: up to 15 days with a pre-registered visa waiver for e-passport holders.

Visa-free entry does not allow you to work. Your passport must be valid for your entire stay, and you may be asked to show a return or onward ticket.

Who Needs a Visa for Japan?

Citizens of countries without an exemption, including India, Vietnam, China, the Philippines, and many countries in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, need a short-term stay visa for tourism. A typical tourist visa allows a single stay of up to 15, 30, or 90 days, and multiple-entry visas are available for frequent visitors who meet certain conditions.

Japan's eVISA

Japan has rolled out an online eVISA for short-term tourist stays. It is open to people who need a visa and live in one of a growing list of countries, including India, the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia. Eligibility depends on where you live and your nationality. You apply online, and the visa is shown on your phone at check-in and immigration. Check the official JAPAN eVISA website to see if you can use it.

Applying through an embassy or visa center

If you can't use the eVISA, apply through the Japanese embassy or consulate that covers where you live, often via an accredited agency or a visa center. In India, for example, applications are handled by VFS Global on behalf of the embassy and consulates.

Documents You Usually Need for a Japan Tourist Visa

  • A valid passport with blank pages.
  • A completed visa application form.
  • A recent passport photo (45 × 35 mm).
  • A flight reservation for your return or onward journey.
  • A day-by-day itinerary and hotel bookings.
  • Proof of funds, such as recent bank statements or an income tax return.
  • For employed applicants, sometimes a letter from your employer.
  • If someone in Japan is inviting you, an invitation letter and their documents.

Requirements differ between embassies, so check the exact list for your location.

Processing Time and Fees

Processing usually takes about one to two weeks, longer in peak seasons. Apply at least a month before you travel. Visa fees vary by nationality and visa type, and some nationalities pay reduced fees under bilateral agreements. Visa centers charge an extra service fee. Fees are usually revised in April, so check the current amounts with your embassy or visa center.

Arriving in Japan

  • Visit Japan Web: Register your details on the Visit Japan Web site before you fly. It creates QR codes for immigration and customs, which speeds up arrival at major airports.
  • Fingerprints and photo: Most foreign visitors are fingerprinted and photographed on arrival.
  • Questions: Officers may ask about your plans, where you are staying, and when you are leaving. Have your hotel address and return ticket handy.
  • Customs: Some medicines, including certain cold and allergy medicines, are restricted in Japan. Check before you pack.

What is JESTA?

Japan plans to introduce JESTA, an online travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors, similar to the US ESTA and the UK ETA. It is expected later this decade. Until it launches, visa-exempt travelers don't need to apply for anything before arriving.

Tips for Planning Your Trip to Japan

  • Check rules for your passport, not your country of residence. Visa exemptions are based on nationality.
  • Book refundable hotels if you are waiting for a visa decision.
  • Keep digital copies of your passport, visa, and bookings.
  • Stay connected from arrival. You will need data for Visit Japan Web QR codes, maps, and transport. An egoViet Japan eSIM can be installed before you fly and connects when you land. See our Japan eSIM guide and check if your phone supports eSIM.
